Alps, sought refuge <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands,<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> Romaunt version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Bible, which was translated <strong>in</strong>to Low Dutch<br />

rhymes.[3]<br />

The city <strong>of</strong> Antwerp occupies a most<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guished place <strong>in</strong> this great movement. So<br />

early as 1106, before <strong>the</strong> disciples <strong>of</strong> Peter Waldo<br />

had appeared <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se parts, we f<strong>in</strong>d a celebrated<br />

preacher, Tanchel<strong>in</strong>us by name, endeavor<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

purge out <strong>the</strong> leaven <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Papacy, and spread<br />

purer doctr<strong>in</strong>e not only <strong>in</strong> Antwerp, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g parts <strong>of</strong> Brabant and Flanders; and,<br />

although vehemently opposed by <strong>the</strong> priests and by<br />

Norbert, <strong>the</strong> first founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> order <strong>of</strong><br />

Premonstratensians, his op<strong>in</strong>ions took a firm hold<br />

<strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est m<strong>in</strong>ds.[4] In <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

century, <strong>the</strong> thirteenth, William Cornelius, also <strong>of</strong><br />

Antwerp, taught a purer doctr<strong>in</strong>e than <strong>the</strong> common<br />

one on <strong>the</strong> Eucharistic Sacrament, which he is said<br />

to have received from <strong>the</strong> disciples <strong>of</strong> Tanchel<strong>in</strong>us.<br />

Nor must we omit to mention Nicolas, <strong>of</strong> Lyra, a<br />

town <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> east <strong>of</strong> Brabant, who lived about 1322,<br />

and who impregnated his Commentary on <strong>the</strong> Bible<br />
