<strong>the</strong>se two great men-John Calv<strong>in</strong> and William <strong>the</strong><br />

Silent -- we owe, above most, this great advance on<br />

<strong>the</strong> road <strong>of</strong> progress and human freedom. The first<br />

had def<strong>in</strong>ed and <strong>in</strong>culcated <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>in</strong> his<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>gs; <strong>the</strong> second had embodied and given<br />

practical effect to it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new State which his<br />

genius and patriotism had called <strong>in</strong>to existence.<br />
