sovereignty left <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> one land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Low Countries, <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were at this moment three communities or nations.<br />

The Walloons, yield<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> a<br />

common faith, had returned under <strong>the</strong> yoke <strong>of</strong><br />

Spa<strong>in</strong>. The Central Prov<strong>in</strong>ces, also mostly Popish,<br />

had ranged <strong>the</strong>mselves under <strong>the</strong> sovereignty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Duke <strong>of</strong> Anjou, bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Henry III. <strong>of</strong> France.<br />

his exceed<strong>in</strong>g sense <strong>of</strong> honor, made him decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong><br />

sovereignty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Central Prov<strong>in</strong>ces, although this<br />

dignity was also repeatedly pressed upon him; and<br />

had he accepted it, it may be that a happier dest<strong>in</strong>y<br />

would have been <strong>in</strong> store for <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands. His<br />

persistent refusal made <strong>the</strong>se Prov<strong>in</strong>ces cast <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
