did not enter <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds that <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

forg<strong>in</strong>g a yoke for <strong>the</strong> conscience, or a fetter for <strong>the</strong><br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g, and that <strong>the</strong>y were sett<strong>in</strong>g up a<br />

barrier beyond which men were not to adventure <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>quiry after truth. Noth<strong>in</strong>g was fur<strong>the</strong>r from<br />

<strong>the</strong> thoughts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformers than this; <strong>the</strong>y<br />

claimed no lordship over <strong>the</strong> consciences <strong>of</strong> men.<br />

The documents which <strong>the</strong>y compiled and presented<br />

to <strong>the</strong> world <strong>the</strong>y styled not a decree, or a rise,<br />

much less a creation, but a Confession, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

issued <strong>the</strong>ir Confessions under this reservation, that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bible alone possessed <strong>in</strong>herent authority, that it<br />

alone was complete and perfect, and that <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

confession was only an approximation, to be<br />

reviewed, altered, amended, enlarged, or<br />

abbreviated accord<strong>in</strong>g as believers advanced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

more precise, full, and accurate understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spirit speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Word. We<br />

have nowhere found <strong>the</strong> views <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reformers on<br />

this po<strong>in</strong>t so admirably set forth as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebrated<br />

John a Lasco's preface to his book on <strong>the</strong><br />

Sacraments; and as this is a matter on which great<br />

misapprehension has been spread abroad, we shall<br />

here give his words. Speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> union <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
