This state <strong>of</strong> matters led to <strong>the</strong> adoption <strong>of</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r measures, which still more complicated and<br />

embarrassed <strong>the</strong> movement. It was becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

evident to William that his basis <strong>of</strong> operations must<br />

be narrowed if he would make it stable; that <strong>the</strong><br />

Pacification <strong>of</strong> Ghent, and <strong>the</strong> Peace <strong>of</strong> Re-ligon, <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves wise and just, embraced peoples that<br />

were diverse, and elements that were<br />

irreconcilable, and <strong>in</strong> consequence were fail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir ends. A few Romanists were staunch patriots,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> great body were show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

<strong>in</strong>capable <strong>of</strong> sympathis<strong>in</strong>g with, or heartily cooperat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> great struggle for <strong>the</strong> liberation <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir native land. Their consciences, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

guidance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jesuits, stifled <strong>the</strong>ir patriotism.<br />

They were awkwardly placed between two<br />

alternatives: if Philip should conquer <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> war<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would lose <strong>the</strong>ir country, if victory should<br />

declare for <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Orange <strong>the</strong>y would lose<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir faith. From this dilemma <strong>the</strong>y could be<br />

delivered only by becom<strong>in</strong>g Protestants, and<br />

Protestants <strong>the</strong>y were determ<strong>in</strong>ed not to become;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y sought escape by <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r door -- namely,<br />

that <strong>of</strong> persuad<strong>in</strong>g or compell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Protestants to<br />
