walls, carry<strong>in</strong>g ammunition and missiles <strong>of</strong> all sorts<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir husbands, bro<strong>the</strong>rs, and fa<strong>the</strong>rs, careless <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> shot that was fall<strong>in</strong>g thick around <strong>the</strong>m. The<br />

apprehension <strong>of</strong> those far more terrible calamities<br />

that were sure to follow <strong>the</strong> entrance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Spaniards, made <strong>the</strong>m forgetful <strong>of</strong> every o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

danger. It is told <strong>of</strong> Ensign Solis, that hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

mounted <strong>the</strong> breach he had a moment's leisure to<br />

survey <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> matters with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, before<br />

he was seized and flung from <strong>the</strong> fortifications.<br />

Escap<strong>in</strong>g with his life, he was able to tell what that<br />

momentary glance had revealed to him with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

walls. He had beheld no masses <strong>of</strong> military, no men<br />

<strong>in</strong> armor; on <strong>the</strong> streets <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beleaguered town he<br />

saw none but pla<strong>in</strong> men, <strong>the</strong> most <strong>of</strong> whom wore<br />

<strong>the</strong> garb <strong>of</strong> fishermen. Humiliat<strong>in</strong>g it was to <strong>the</strong><br />

mailed chivalry <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> to be checked, flung back,<br />

and routed by "pla<strong>in</strong> men <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> garb <strong>of</strong> fishermen."<br />

The burghers <strong>of</strong> Alkmaar wore <strong>the</strong>ir breastplates<br />

under <strong>the</strong>ir fisherman's coat -- <strong>the</strong> consciousness,<br />

namely, <strong>of</strong> a righteous cause.<br />

The assault had commenced at three <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
