conflicts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle-field; and both he shunned,<br />

he had <strong>the</strong> ample brow, <strong>the</strong> blue eyes, and <strong>the</strong><br />

aquil<strong>in</strong>e nose <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r; but <strong>the</strong>se agreeable<br />

features were forgotten <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ugl<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> under<br />

part <strong>of</strong> his face. His lower jaw protruded. It was a<br />

Burgundian deformity, but <strong>in</strong> Philip's case it had<br />

development. To this disagreeable feature was<br />

added ano<strong>the</strong>r repulsive one, also a family<br />

peculiarity, a heavy hang<strong>in</strong>g under-lip, which<br />

enlarged <strong>the</strong> apparent size <strong>of</strong> his mouth, and<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>ned <strong>the</strong> impression, which <strong>the</strong> unpleasant<br />

protrusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> jaw made on <strong>the</strong> spectator, <strong>of</strong><br />

animal voracity and savageness.<br />

The puny, meagre, sickly-look<strong>in</strong>g man who<br />

stood beside <strong>the</strong> warlike and once robust form <strong>of</strong><br />

Charles, was not more unlike his fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> body<br />

than he was unlike him <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d. Not one <strong>of</strong> his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r's great qualities did he possess. He lacked<br />

his statesmanship; he had no knowledge <strong>of</strong> men, he<br />

could not enter <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir feel<strong>in</strong>gs, nor<br />
