effusion <strong>of</strong> a drop <strong>of</strong> blood, was <strong>Protestantism</strong><br />

established <strong>in</strong> Amsterdam. The first Reformed<br />

pastors <strong>in</strong> that capital were John Reuchel<strong>in</strong> and<br />

Peter Hardenberg.[9] The Lu<strong>the</strong>rans and<br />

Anabaptists were permitted to meet openly for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

worship, and <strong>the</strong> Papists were allowed <strong>the</strong> private<br />

exercise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irs.<br />

With this prosperous gale <strong>Protestantism</strong> made<br />

way <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cities <strong>of</strong> Holland and <strong>of</strong> Brabant.<br />

This progress, pr<strong>of</strong>oundly peaceful <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> majority<br />

<strong>of</strong> cases, was attended with tumult <strong>in</strong> one or two<br />

<strong>in</strong>stances. In Haarlem <strong>the</strong> Protestants rose on a<br />

Communion Sunday, and com<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong> priests<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ca<strong>the</strong>dral while <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

tapers and unfurl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir banners for a grand<br />

procession, <strong>the</strong>y dispossessed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir church.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> tumult a priest was sla<strong>in</strong>, but <strong>the</strong> soldier who<br />

did <strong>the</strong> deed had to atone for it with his life; <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r rioters were summoned by tuck <strong>of</strong> drum to<br />

restore <strong>the</strong> articles <strong>the</strong>y had stolen, and <strong>the</strong> Papists<br />

were assured, by a public declaration, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> free<br />

exercise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir religion.[10] The presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
