at <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> victorious armies, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

presence <strong>of</strong> admir<strong>in</strong>g senates, and <strong>of</strong> applaud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and grateful nations. These are great; but <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

an order <strong>of</strong> men who are greater still. There have<br />

been a select few who have rendered <strong>the</strong> very<br />

highest services to mank<strong>in</strong>d, not with <strong>the</strong> applause<br />

and succor <strong>of</strong> those <strong>the</strong>y sought to benefit, but <strong>in</strong><br />

spite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir opposition, amid <strong>the</strong> contempt and<br />

scorn <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, and amid ever-blacken<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

ever-burst<strong>in</strong>g disasters, and who lift<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir eyes<br />

from armies and thrones have fixed <strong>the</strong>m upon a<br />

great unseen Power, <strong>in</strong> whose righteousness and<br />

justice <strong>the</strong>y confided, and so have been able to<br />

struggle on till <strong>the</strong>y atta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir, sublime object.<br />

These are <strong>the</strong> peers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> race, <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> first<br />

magnates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. In this order <strong>of</strong> great men<br />

stands William, Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Orange. On receiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

melancholy <strong>in</strong>telligence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

on <strong>the</strong> fatal field <strong>of</strong> Mook, William retreated<br />

northward <strong>in</strong>to Holland. He expected that <strong>the</strong><br />

Spaniards would follow him, and improve <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

victory while <strong>the</strong> terror it <strong>in</strong>spired was still recent;<br />

but Avila was prevented pursu<strong>in</strong>g him by a mut<strong>in</strong>y<br />
