great crisis to <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> conscience and <strong>of</strong> liberty<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> mighty.<br />

A small <strong>in</strong>cident which happened at this<br />

moment was fraught with vast consequences.<br />

Count Louis <strong>of</strong> Nassau, approach<strong>in</strong>g from France,<br />

made himself master <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> frontier town <strong>of</strong> Mons<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> south.[11] Alva was excessively mortified by<br />

this mishap, and he was bent on recover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

place. He was counselled to defer <strong>the</strong> siege <strong>of</strong><br />

Mons till he should have ext<strong>in</strong>guished <strong>the</strong> ris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> north. He was rem<strong>in</strong>ded that Holland and<br />

Zealand were deeply <strong>in</strong>fected with heresy; that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Orange was personally popular;<br />

that nature had fortified <strong>the</strong>se Prov<strong>in</strong>ces by<br />

<strong>in</strong>tersect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m with rivers and arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea,<br />

and that if time were given <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants to<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>ir canals and cities, many sieges and<br />

battles might not suffice to reduce <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

obedience. This advice was em<strong>in</strong>ently wise, but<br />

Alva stopped his ear to it. He went on with <strong>the</strong><br />

siege <strong>of</strong> Mons, and while "he was pluck<strong>in</strong>g this<br />
