Roman Catholic Prov<strong>in</strong>ces -- <strong>in</strong> all places where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y numbered a hundred -- <strong>the</strong> right to a chapel <strong>in</strong><br />

which to celebrate <strong>the</strong>ir worship; and where <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

numbers did not enable <strong>the</strong>m to claim this<br />

privilege, <strong>the</strong>y were never<strong>the</strong>less to be permitted<br />

<strong>the</strong> unmolested exercise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir worship <strong>in</strong> private.<br />

But <strong>in</strong> many places <strong>the</strong> fights accorded by <strong>the</strong><br />

treaty were denied <strong>the</strong>m: <strong>the</strong>y could have no<br />

chapel, and even <strong>the</strong> private exercise <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

worship exposed <strong>the</strong>m to molestations <strong>of</strong> various<br />

k<strong>in</strong>ds. The Protestants, <strong>in</strong>censed by this ant<strong>in</strong>ational<br />

spirit and bad faith, and emboldened<br />

moreover by <strong>the</strong>ir own grow<strong>in</strong>g numbers, seized by<br />

force <strong>in</strong> many cities <strong>the</strong> rights which <strong>the</strong>y could not<br />

obta<strong>in</strong> by peaceable means.<br />

Disorders and seditions were <strong>the</strong> consequence.<br />

Ghent, <strong>the</strong> city which had given its name to <strong>the</strong><br />

Pacification, led <strong>the</strong> van <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se disgraceful<br />

tumults; and it was remarked that nowhere was <strong>the</strong><br />

Pacification worse kept than <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city where it<br />

had been framed. The Reformed <strong>in</strong> Ghent, excited<br />

by <strong>the</strong> harangues delivered to <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> pulpit<br />

by Peter Da<strong>the</strong>nus, an ex-monk, and now a<br />
