descriptive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ravages <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r army -- before<br />

<strong>the</strong>m was a garden, clo<strong>the</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rich blossoms <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Gothic genius and art, beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m was a<br />

wilderness strewn over with ru<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

These iconoclasts appeared first <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> district<br />

<strong>of</strong> St. Omer, <strong>in</strong> Flanders, where <strong>the</strong>y sacked <strong>the</strong><br />

convent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nuns <strong>of</strong> Wolverghen. Emboldened<br />

by <strong>the</strong>ir success, <strong>the</strong> cry was raised, "To Ypres, to<br />

Ypres!"[4] "On <strong>the</strong>ir way thi<strong>the</strong>r," says Strada,<br />

"<strong>the</strong>ir number <strong>in</strong>creased, like a snowball roll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from a mounta<strong>in</strong>-top <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> valley."[5] They<br />

purged <strong>the</strong> roads as <strong>the</strong>y advanced, <strong>the</strong>y ravaged<br />

<strong>the</strong> churches around Ypres, and enter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> town<br />

<strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>flicted unspar<strong>in</strong>g demolition upon all <strong>the</strong><br />

images <strong>in</strong> its sanctuaries. "Some set ladders to <strong>the</strong><br />

walls, with hammers and staves batter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

pictures. O<strong>the</strong>rs broke asunder <strong>the</strong> iron-work, seats,<br />

and pulpit. O<strong>the</strong>rs cast<strong>in</strong>g ropes about <strong>the</strong> great<br />

statues <strong>of</strong> Our Savior Christ, and <strong>the</strong> sa<strong>in</strong>ts, pulled<br />

<strong>the</strong>m down to <strong>the</strong> ground."[6] The day follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>re ga<strong>the</strong>red "ano<strong>the</strong>r flock <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> like birds <strong>of</strong><br />

prey," which directed <strong>the</strong>ir flight towards Courtray<br />
