<strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cities which had submitted<br />

to William were permitted to redeem <strong>the</strong>ir lives by<br />

<strong>the</strong> payment <strong>of</strong> an enormous ransom.<br />

Not so, however, <strong>the</strong> cities <strong>of</strong> Zutphen and<br />

Naarden. Zutphen was subjected to <strong>the</strong> same<br />

shock<strong>in</strong>g barbarities which had been <strong>in</strong>flicted on<br />

Mechl<strong>in</strong>. Here <strong>the</strong> spoil to be ga<strong>the</strong>red was less, for<br />

<strong>the</strong> town was not so rich as Mechl<strong>in</strong>, but <strong>the</strong><br />

licence given to <strong>the</strong> sword was on that account all<br />

<strong>the</strong> greater; and when <strong>the</strong> soldiers grew weary with<br />

slaughter<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y threw <strong>the</strong>ir victims <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Issel,<br />

and <strong>in</strong>dulged <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> horrid pastime <strong>of</strong><br />

pelt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> drown<strong>in</strong>g men and women with missiles<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y rose to <strong>the</strong> surface before f<strong>in</strong>ally s<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

We record <strong>the</strong> fate <strong>of</strong> Naarden last, because its<br />

doom was <strong>the</strong> most appall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three; for it is a<br />

series <strong>of</strong> horrors which we are thus briefly trac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to its climax. Naarden opened its gates to Don<br />

Frederic de Toledo, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Alva, on a promise<br />

<strong>of</strong> immunity from sack for a slight equivalent. The<br />

promise <strong>of</strong> Toledo was violated with a shock<strong>in</strong>g<br />

perfidy. First <strong>the</strong> male population were put to <strong>the</strong><br />
