The same city and <strong>the</strong> same convent furnished<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r Reformer yet more <strong>in</strong>trepid than Spreng.<br />

This was Henry <strong>of</strong> Zutphen. He, too, had sat at <strong>the</strong><br />

feet <strong>of</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r, and along with his doctr<strong>in</strong>e had<br />

carried away no small amount <strong>of</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r's dramatic<br />

power <strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g it forth. Christ's <strong>of</strong>fice as a Savior<br />

he f<strong>in</strong>ely put <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g anti<strong>the</strong>ses: -- "He<br />

s<strong>in</strong>, reserv<strong>in</strong>g that entirely and exclusively to <strong>the</strong><br />

Savior, Zutphen strenuously <strong>in</strong>sisted that <strong>the</strong><br />

believer should be careful to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> good works.<br />

Antwerp was brief. He was seized and thrown <strong>in</strong>to<br />

prison. He did not deceive himself as to <strong>the</strong> fate<br />

that awaited him. He kept awake dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> silent<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> night, prepar<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> death for which he<br />

looked on <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g day.<br />

Suddenly a great uproar arose round his prison.<br />
