<strong>the</strong> petitions and axes which <strong>the</strong>y held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

hands, and <strong>the</strong> symbolical devices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beggars<br />

hung round <strong>the</strong>ir necks, <strong>the</strong>y were probably meant<br />

to denote <strong>the</strong> image-break<strong>in</strong>g Protestants and <strong>the</strong><br />

Confederates. On <strong>the</strong> pedestal was <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
