excommunicated by <strong>the</strong> Synod <strong>of</strong> Haarlem next<br />

year, he was susta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spiritual functions and<br />

temporal emoluments <strong>of</strong> his <strong>of</strong>fice by <strong>the</strong><br />

magistrates <strong>of</strong> Leyden. The matter was abundantly<br />

prolific <strong>of</strong> strifes and divisions, which had all but<br />

ru<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> Church at Leyden, until it ended <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

recalcitrant resign<strong>in</strong>g his m<strong>in</strong>istry and adopt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

trade <strong>of</strong> a distiller.[5]<br />
