At <strong>the</strong> moment that <strong>the</strong> Hollanders were not<br />

unnaturally oppressed with grave thoughts<br />

touch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> struggle for which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were gird<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves, uncerta<strong>in</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

country was to become <strong>the</strong> burial-place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

liberties and <strong>the</strong>ir persons, or <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ater <strong>of</strong> a yet<br />

higher civilisation, an <strong>in</strong>cident occurred that helped<br />

to enliven <strong>the</strong>ir spirits, and confirm <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

resolution to resist. The one city <strong>in</strong> Holland that<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> Alva was Amsterdam, and<br />

thi<strong>the</strong>r Toledo, after <strong>the</strong> butchery at Naarden,<br />

marched with his army. In <strong>the</strong> shallow sea around<br />

Amsterdam, locked up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ice, lay part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Dutch fleet. The Spanish general sent a body <strong>of</strong><br />

troops over <strong>the</strong> frozen waters to attack <strong>the</strong> ships.<br />

Their advance was perceived, and <strong>the</strong> Dutch<br />

soldiers, fasten<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>ir skates, and grasp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir muskets, descended <strong>the</strong> ships' sides to give<br />

battle to <strong>the</strong> Spaniards. Sweep<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> rapidity<br />

<strong>of</strong> a cloud towards <strong>the</strong> enemy, <strong>the</strong>y poured a deadly<br />
