assemblies, and that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sermons <strong>the</strong>y did not<br />

<strong>in</strong>veigh aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Popish religion.[1] Thus a<br />

gleam broke out through <strong>the</strong> cloud, and <strong>the</strong> storm<br />

was succeeded by a momentary calm.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> sign<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> this treaty <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ces went<br />

down to <strong>the</strong>ir several prov<strong>in</strong>ces, and earnestly<br />

labored to restore <strong>the</strong> public peace. The Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong><br />

Orange and Counts Egmont, Horn, and Hoogstraten<br />

were especially zealous <strong>in</strong> this matter, nor<br />

were <strong>the</strong>ir efforts without success. In Antwerp,<br />

where Orange was governor, and where he was<br />

greatly beloved, quiet was speedily re-established,<br />

<strong>the</strong> great ca<strong>the</strong>dral was aga<strong>in</strong> opened, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Romish worship resumed as aforetime. It was<br />

agreed that all <strong>the</strong> consecrated edifices should<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman Catholics,<br />

but a convention was at <strong>the</strong> same time made with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dutch and Walloon congregations, empower<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to erect places <strong>of</strong> worship with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> citywalls<br />

for <strong>the</strong>ir own use. The latter arrangement, --<br />

<strong>the</strong> privilege, namely, accorded <strong>the</strong> Reformed <strong>of</strong><br />

worshipp<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> walls -- was a concession<br />
