if <strong>the</strong>y had atta<strong>in</strong>ed a knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

truth, not to be deterred by <strong>the</strong> fear <strong>of</strong> death from<br />

confess<strong>in</strong>g it. In <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g month, two youths<br />

were discovered outside <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Tournay<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Scriptures. An <strong>in</strong>timacy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> closest<br />

k<strong>in</strong>d, hallowed by <strong>the</strong>ir love <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel, had knit<br />

<strong>the</strong>m toge<strong>the</strong>r all <strong>the</strong>ir lives; nor were <strong>the</strong>y parted<br />

now. They were strangled and burned at <strong>the</strong> same<br />

stake.[5] Consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> number and <strong>the</strong> barbarity<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se executions, it does not surprise one that<br />

Orange and his associates believed that if <strong>the</strong><br />

methods <strong>of</strong> extirpat<strong>in</strong>g heresy were to be changed,<br />

it could only be for milder <strong>in</strong>flictions. They had yet<br />

to learn <strong>the</strong> fertility <strong>of</strong> Philip's <strong>in</strong>ventive genius.<br />

Scarcely had Egmont given <strong>in</strong> his report <strong>of</strong> his<br />

mission, when new <strong>in</strong>structions arrived from<br />

Philip, to <strong>the</strong> effect that not only were <strong>the</strong> old<br />

placards to be rigorously enforced, but, over and<br />

above, <strong>the</strong> canons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> Trent were to<br />

be promulgated as law throughout <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands.<br />

These canons gave <strong>the</strong> entire power <strong>of</strong> try<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

punish<strong>in</strong>g heretics to <strong>the</strong> clergy. In short, <strong>the</strong>y<br />
