was at that time a magaz<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> mercenary soldiers,<br />

from which both <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> Orange and Alva<br />

drew supplies, and troops <strong>of</strong> this class were but<br />

little amenable to discipl<strong>in</strong>e when <strong>the</strong>ir pay fell <strong>in</strong>to<br />

arrears, as was now <strong>the</strong> case. But William felt that<br />

such excesses must be checked at all hazards,<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise his cause would be disgraced and<br />

ultimately ru<strong>in</strong>ed; and accord<strong>in</strong>gly he issued an<br />

order forbidd<strong>in</strong>g all such barbarities <strong>in</strong> future under<br />

pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> death.[1]<br />

For some time his march was a triumphal one.<br />

rise at his call, and redeem <strong>the</strong>mselves from <strong>the</strong><br />

yoke <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>. The important city <strong>of</strong> Mechl<strong>in</strong><br />

declared <strong>in</strong> his favor. Louva<strong>in</strong> refused to admit a<br />

garrison <strong>of</strong> his soldiers, but sent him a contribution<br />
