await<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> approach <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> master <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

We see <strong>the</strong>m clos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> terrific battle with his<br />

legions, and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fight till a ghastly<br />

bank <strong>of</strong> corpses proclaimed that <strong>the</strong>y had been<br />

exterm<strong>in</strong>ated ra<strong>the</strong>r than subdued.[1]<br />

The tribes <strong>of</strong> Batavia now passed under <strong>the</strong><br />

yoke <strong>of</strong> Rome, to which <strong>the</strong>y submitted with great<br />

impatience. When <strong>the</strong> empire began to totter <strong>the</strong>y<br />

rose <strong>in</strong> revolt, be<strong>in</strong>g jo<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong>ir neighbors, <strong>the</strong><br />

Frisians and <strong>the</strong> Belgae, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hope <strong>of</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir liberty; but <strong>the</strong> Roman power, though <strong>in</strong><br />

decay, was still too strong to be shaken by <strong>the</strong><br />

assault <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se tribes, however brave; and it was<br />

not till <strong>the</strong> whole German race, moved by an allpervad<strong>in</strong>g<br />

impulse, rose and began <strong>the</strong>ir march<br />

upon Rome, that <strong>the</strong>y were able, <strong>in</strong> common with<br />

all <strong>the</strong> peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> North, to throw <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> yoke<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oppressor.<br />

After four centuries <strong>of</strong> chequered fortunes,<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g which <strong>the</strong> Batavian element was<br />

<strong>in</strong>extricably blended with <strong>the</strong> Frisian, <strong>the</strong> Belgic,<br />
