Steigt Rauch in die Luft, ist das weithin sichtbar. Ein Ereignis schreibt sich für kurze Zeit in den Himmel. Besonders
den nordamerikanischen Ureinwohnern wird zugeschrieben, diese Tatsache genutzt zu haben, um Informationen
in Form von Rauchzeichen zu übermitteln.
Für CLUSTER erzeugte Rainer Gamsjäger eine zehn Meter hohe Rauchsäule und zeichnete sie auf Video auf. Sie
bildet das Ausgangsmaterial für seine Auseinandersetzung mit digitalen Informationen. Neben der Apparatur
zur Übertragung von Information, ist es entscheidend, sie kodieren und wieder entschlüsseln zu können. Im Fall
von Rauchzeichen besteht Information aus Abfolgen von Rauch und Nichtrauch; in der digitalen Welt aus Abfolgen
von Strom und Nichtstrom, Null und Eins. Die Manipulation, die in CLUSTER am aus Nullen und Einsen
bestehenden Videobild vorgenommen wird, ist eine kontrollierte Umreihung der aufgezeichneten Datenabfolgen...
CLUSTER führt vor, dass nichts einer eindeutigen Interpretation unterzogen werden kann, dass es eine Frage
der Apparatur bzw. der Betrachtung ist, wie man mit Informationen umgeht. Es muss möglich sein, in der Interpretation
neue Felder zu entdecken. Dieser Anspruch an die Kunst, findet in CLUSTER einen gelungenen

When smoke rises into the air, it’s visible from a great distance. An event inscribes itself into the sky for a brief
time. Indigenous North Americans in particular are said to have made practical use of this, sending information
with the aid of smoke signals.
When making CLUSTER Rainer Gamsjäger created a ten-meter column of smoke and filmed it on videotape. This
served as the raw material for his examination of digital information. In addition to the apparatus used to transfer
information, being able to encode and then decode it is essential. In the case of smoke signals, information
is in the form of sequences of smoke and non-smoke; in the digital world sequences of electricity and non-electricity,
zero and one, are involved. The manipulation of the video image comprised of zeros and ones in CLUS-
TER represents a controlled rearrangement of the data sequences that have been filmed...
CLUSTER demonstrates how nothing can be interpreted equivocally, that the way we deal with information is a
question of apparatus or point of view. Finding new fields in the interpretation must be possible. This expectation
of art is expressed successfully in CLUSTER. (Siegfried A. Fruhauf)
Rainer Gamsjäger (born in 1974 in Bad Ischl, Austria) graduated held a foreign exchange scholarship in Berlin
Weissensee and in 2007 he graduated form the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz / Experimental Design.
