Azar Saiyar
Zwischen Orten. Zwischen Menschen. Helsinki-Teheran
Between places. Between people. Helsinki-Tehran is a
cinematic study on immigration and memory - on the
shared verbal and nonverbal knowledge and emotional
understanding which travels with displaced people
from one generation to another. Repeated themes in
Saiyar´s art work are people’s means or lack of means
to operate in their communities and borders of identity,
which mirror the traces of other people, cultures
and common routines in us.
Azar Saiyar, * 1979, is daughter of an Iranian father
and a Finnish mother. Visiting Iran only once when she
was one year old, she lived her childhood in Finland and
Sweden. Saiyar graduated from Turku Arts Academy as
a graphic designer in 2004. She has worked with film
since 2002, mostly as an editor. Helsinki-Tehran is her
debut film as a director and her graduation work to the
Visual Culture MA-programme in University of Art and
Design Helsinki.
INVITATION
Payam Zeinalabedini
›The Iraqi People have no hospitality-facilities for the
Iranian caravans of people coming to Karbala to pray
and praise the Iman Hussein. One reason is the American
army which occupy their country. But still thousands
of pilgrims cross the Iranian–Iraqi border and to
Karbala by foot.‹ Payam Zeinalabedini
The filmmaker makes this journey herself for the first
time in memory of her grandmother. The camera is the
third eye on this pilgrimage, which creates more than
one serious problem for the people, due to the unresolved
political situation in Iraq.
