BLACK SALT WATER ELEGY

Black Saltwater Elegy verbindet widersprüchliche Inhalte einer weitverbreiteten
Geschichte über die Enteignung (Africville) mit der Einsamkeit
der Phantasien ihres Protagonisten, die diesen während seiner Nachtschicht
heimsuchen. Nachdem zunächst aufwühlendes Archivmaterial
über die Zerstörung von Africville gezeigt wird, wird der Film immer mehr
zu einem ernsthaften Portrait, das von Beobachtungen lebt. Ein angenehmes
Gefühl bezüglich der Dauer von Nachtarbeit verwandelt sich
langsam in subtile Gesten, die auf choreografierte Ereignisse hinweisen.
Schließlich kommt es zu einem Bruch, als der Protagonist mit einer plötzlich
auftauchenden Traumlandschaft verschmilzt, in der zerstörte Landschaften
und die Wiederauferstehung einer längst nicht mehr existierenden
Gemeinschaft miteinander verknüpft werden. Die körperlose Sicht
des Protagonisten übernehmend, schwebt das Publikum, umhüllt von einem
Nebel aus Salzwasser, über einem wieder aufgebauten und für immer
existierenden Africville.
Black Saltwater Elegy intimately links the discordant threads of a popular
history of dispossession (Africville) with the solitude of its protagonist's
graveyard-shift fantasies. After opening with disquieting archival
footage of the demolition of Africville, the film shifts to an austere observational
portrait. A palatable sense of the duration of midnight work
slowly shifts into subtle gestures that hint towards choreographed
events. Eventually, a breach occurs as the protagonist fuses with an
emergent dreamscape, where ruined landscapes and the resurrection of
an extinct community intertwine. Using the protagonist's disembodied
point-of-view, the audience floats above a reconstructed Africville, one
forever present, nesting in a bed of saltwater fog.
Nagler's films have played across Canada, in the U.S., Europe and Asia at
venues such the Centre Pompidou (Paris), l'Université Paris Panthéon Sorbonne
and Lincoln Center in New York. Originally from Winnipeg, Solomon
Nagler currently lives in Halifax where he is a professor of film production
at NSCAD University.

Der Film öffnet sich dem Zuschauer,
indem er kurze Einblicke in seinen
eigenen Entstehungsprozess
gewährt. Er verursacht Konflikte,
da er die Aufmerksamkeit des Zuschauers
auf die Qualität des Materials
des Filmmediums lenkt,
während er gleichzeitig auch die
Erzählform für die Darstellung einer
Filmproduktion nutzt.
A structuralist metafilm about
making a film. The movie unfolds itself
to the viewer by showing
glimpses of it's own filmmaking
process. It creates conflict by guiding
viewers attention to the material
qualities of film medium, while
also using narrative form for the
representation of the filmmaking
process.
Mauri Lehtonen is a filmmaker and
a writer. The style of his film works
varies from abstract structuralism
to experimental pop mutations. His
writings can be defined as ›postapocalyptic
trash poems‹.
