EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL
Das European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück bietet jährlich einen aktuellen Überblick über die internationale
Medienkunstszene und ist ein lebendiger und bedeutender Treffpunkt für Medienkünstler, Kuratoren, Verleiher
und Galeristen und ein interessiertes internationales Publikum.
Das European Media Art Festival verfügt über etwa 4.000 Filme, Videos und Dokumentationen inklusive der Hintergrundtexte,
Fotos und Biografien, die seit 1981 in Osnabrück gesammelt wurden. Dieser einmalige Fundus
von Experimentalfilmen, Videokunst, Performancedokumentationen, Installationskonzepten und -bändern sowie
Arbeiten auf CD Rom - von und über die internationale Medienkunstszene - soll nach anerkannten Qualitätskriterien
grundlegend aufgearbeitet und zugänglich gemacht werden. Aufgrund der zeitlichen Dimension
von fast drei Dekaden ist auch die kunsthistorische Aufarbeitung notwendig.
Die Sicherung und Restaurierung der Originalbänder und Filme ist eine wesentliche Zukunftsaufgabe für diesen
Archivbereich, denn es ist bekannt, daß Videobänder, CDs und auch Filme nur eine begrenzte Lebensdauer
besitzen. Die achtziger und neunziger Jahre sind kunsthistorisch deshalb so interessant, da sich in dieser Zeit
aus den Disziplinen Experimentalfilm, Videokunst und (interaktive) Computerkunst sowie Netzkunst eine neue
Form entwickelt hat, die unter dem Begriff Medienkunst subsumiert wird. Das Festival in Osnabrück und damit
auch dessen Bestand zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass hier Avantgarde-, Experimentalfilm, Videokunst, Filmund
Videoinstallationen, Performances, interaktive digitale Projekte bereits aus den achtziger und neunziger
Jahren vorliegen, die in ihrer Vielzahl bei keiner anderen Institution existieren. Das EUROPEAN MEDIAART
FESTIVAL möchte nun die wichtigsten Materialien des Archives bearbeiten und in Zusammenarbeit mit weiteren
Institutionen zeitgemäße Vermittlungsformen für Medienkunst entwickeln.
The European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück offers a current overview of the international Media Art scene
every year, and is a lively, important meeting place for media artists, curators, lenders and gallery owners, as
well as an international audience.
European Media Art Festival has around 4,000 films, videos and documentations, including the background
texts, photos and biographies collected in Osnabrück since 1981. This unique pool of experimental films, video
art, performance documentation, installation concepts and volumes, as well as works on CD ROM – by and
about the international Media Art scene – is to be fundamentally processed and made accessible to the public
in compliance with recognised quality criteria. Art historical reprocessing is also necessary, due to the time
span of almost three decades, including also the contextualisation of Media Art from today’s perspective in
view of technical and social developments.
Safeguarding and restoring the original reels and films is a major future task for this area of the archive, because
it is well known that video tapes, CDs and films only have a limited life span. The 1980s and 90s are so
interesting, from an art-historical perspective, because a new form – subsumed under the term ›Media Art‹ –
developed out of the disciplines of experimental film, video art, (interactive) computer art and web art back
then. What characterises the festival in Osnabrück, and its stock, is that it is the institution with the largest
number of avant-garde, experimental films, video art, film and video installations, performances, interactive
digital projects from the 1980s and 90s. The EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL would now like to process the
most important material in its archives and develop up-to-date means of communication for Media Art in collaboration
with other institutions.
