Heliocentric bedient sich der Zeitrafferfotografie und astronomischer
Standortverfolgung, um den Verlauf der Sonne über
eine Reihe von Landschaften aufzuzeichnen. Die gesamte Umwelt
scheint an der Kamera vorbeizuziehen, während die Sonne
in der Mitte jedes einzelnen Bildes bleibt und es uns somit ermöglicht,
die Rotation der Erde und die Umkreisung um die
Sonne nachzuvollziehen. Wenn das Sonnenlicht durch vorbeiziehende
Wetterverhältnisse und der Umgebung, in der wir es
sehen, unterbrochen wird, macht es diese hörbar wie die Nadel
eines Plattenspielers. Das ›heliozentrische‹ Bild des Universums
wurde vom dritten Jahrhundert v. Chr. an diskutiert und ist
auch in unserer modernen Zeit immer noch ein Streitpunkt.
Heliocentric uses time-lapse photography and astronomical
tracking to plot the sun's trajectory across a series of landscapes.
The entire environment seems to pan past the camera
whilst the sun stays in the centre of each frame, enabling us to
gauge the earth's rotation and orbit around the sun. As the
Sun's light becomes disrupted by passing weather conditions
and the environment through which we encounter it, it audibly
plays them as if it were a stylus. The 'heliocentric' view of the
universe was debated from the third century BC onwards and
remained contentious into modern times.
Since 1999 UK artists Ruth Jarman, *1973 and Joe Gerhardt,
*1972 (Semiconductor) have worked with digital animation to
transcend the constraints of time, scale and natural forces; they
explore the world beyond human experience, questioning our
very existence. Central to these works is the role of sound. Their
award-winning work has been exhibited at Hirshhorn Museum,
Washington USA, Arnolfini Bristol and Nuit Blanche Paris, the
British Council Jerusalem, Museum of Contemporary Art Lyon
and Dissonanze Festival Rome.

THE VOYAGERS
Penny Lane
1977 schickte die NASA Voyager 1 und Voyager
2 auf eine Abenteuerreise in den interstellaren
Raum. Beide Raumschiffe haben
eine goldene Schallplatte mit an Bord, eine
große Sammlung an Bildern und Klängen, die
das Beste unseres Planeten Erde verkörpern.
Carl Sagan sagte, ›man wird auf das
Raumschiff treffen und die Schallplatte wird
nur dann gespielt, wenn es hochentwickelte,
sich im Weltall bewegende Zivilisationen im
interstellaren Raum gibt. Aber die Tatsache,
dass diese ›Flaschenpost‹ in das kosmische
Meer katapultiert wird, sagt etwas sehr
Hoffnungsvolles über das Leben auf diesem
Planeten aus.‹
In 1977, NASA sent Voyager 1 and Voyager 2
on an epic journey into interstellar space.
Each spacecraft carries a golden record album,
a massive compilation of images and
sounds embodying the best of Planet Earth.
According to Carl Sagan, ›[t]he spacecraft
will be encountered and the record played
only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations
in interstellar space. But the
launching of this bottle into the cosmic
ocean says something very hopeful about life
on this planet.‹
