JAPANESE MEDIA ART NOW
Einen besonderen Schwerpunkt setzt das EMAF mit ›Japanese Media
Art Now‹ aus Anlass des 150-jährigen Jubiläums der Deutsch-
Japanischen Freundschaft.
In allen Programm-Teilen des EMAF gibt es Beiträge aus Japan zu
sehen, in denen die Kultur und die spezifischen Ausprägungen der
Medienkunst in Japan aus den Bereichen Film, Installationen und
Performances vorgestellt werden. Wir möchten den kulturellen Dialog,
gerade in dieser für Japan aktuell sehr schwierigen Situation,
noch intensiver führen und damit der Öffentlichkeit die Kultur Japans
nahe bringen.
Der mit dem Prix Ars Electronica 2010 ausgezeichnete Ryoichi Kurokawa zeigt beim diesjährigen EMAF seine
Performance ›Rheo‹. Der Titel bezieht sich auf das griechische Wort für ‚Fluss‘ bzw.‚fließen‘ denn so gehen auch
die Audio- und Video-Aufnahmen realer Landschaften fließend in eine grafische Analyse über. Außerdem zeigt
das EMAF die Performance ›Braun Tube Jazz Band‹ von Ei Wada, bei der alte Fernseher, also Braun’sche Röhren,
zu Musikinstrumenten werden.
›The Tenth Sentiment‹ heißt die Installation des Künstlers Ryoto Kuwakubo, die den Betrachter mitnimmt auf
eine Zugreise. Eine mit einer Lichtquelle ausgestattete Modelleisenbahn fährt auf ihrem Weg an unterschiedlichsten
Gegenständen vorbei und wirft eine beeindruckende Schattenlandschaft in den Raum. Norimichi Hirakawa’s
›the irreversible‹ ist ein Videoprojekt bei dem 1024 Explosionen rückwärts abgespielt werden und so
ein Spiel mit der Zeitachse entsteht.
In den Filmprogrammen werden neben den Programmen Nippon Conception und der Animations Film Auswahl
des Japan Media Arts Festival (JMAF) in Tokio auch die Kino-Filme ›Symbol‹ (Regie: Hitoshi Matsumoto) und
›Branded to Kill‹ (Regie: Seijun Suzuki) zu sehen sein.
Vorträge der Kuratorin Prof. Machiko Kusahara aus Tokio und der Professorin und Autorin Yvonne Spielmann im
Kongress runden das Spezial Japanese Media Art Now ab.

The EMAF will be focusing on ›Japanese Media Art Now‹ to mark the 150 years of friendship between Germany
and Japan. Contributions from Japan are represented in all programme parts of the EMAF in which the culture
and the specific characteristics of Media Art in Japan will be shown from the areas of film, installation and performance.
We would like to conduct the cultural dialogue even more intense, especially in this extremely difficult
situation for Japan and like to encourage a better understanding of the culture of Japan in the public.
Ryoichi Kurokawa, who was awarded the Prix Ars Electronica in 2010, will show his performance ›Rheo‹ at this
year’s festival. The title refers to the Greek word for ‘flow’ or ‘flowing’, which is why the audio and video shots of
real landscapes flow into a graphical analysis. The EMAF will also be showing the performance ›Braun Tube Jazz
Band‹ by Ei Wada, in which old cathode ray tubes become musical instruments.
›The Tenth Sentiment‹ is the name of the installation by the artist Ryoto Kuwakubo, who takes the viewer with
him on a train journey. A model railway, equipped with a light source, goes on its way, passing all kinds of objects,
creating an impressive landscape of shadows in the room. Norimichi Hirakawa’s ›the irreversible‹ is a
video project in which 1024 explosions are played in reverse, creating a game with the time line.
The film programmes will offer not only Japanese short films; in the programme Nippon Conception but screen
also the feature films ›Symbol‹ (director: Hitoshi Matsumoto) and ›Branded to Kill‹ (director: Seijun Suzuki). In
addition, the EMAF will present a selection of animation films from the Japan Media Arts Festival (JMAF) in
Tokyo.
Lectures by the curator professor Machiko Kusahara from Tokyo and professor and author Yvonne Spielmann
at the Festival’s Congress round off the country special Japanese Media Art Now.
