Cette mort annoncée, c’est à quoi va s’affronter lafamille, mais aussi sa petite-fille, Elsa Quinette, réalisatrice, et la nécessitéde son film. Celui-ci va emprunter deux voies, et alterner leurs avancées.Autrement dit, donner au deuil anticipé réponse articulée, ouverte :réponse de montage. D’une part, accompagner avec affection cette vieilledame entourée de ses proches, enregistrer l’amour partagé à hautevoix jusqu’aux lisières de la vie, suivre par exemple le fils aîné exorciserpeur et affliction en un étrange moment théâtral, tout d’humour noircathartique. D’autre part, s’autoriser d’un large détour, suivre son frèrephotographe collecter des images de visages ailleurs, vers une autreemphase du trépas, vers d’autres rites, aux Ghâts de Bénarès enInde, dans ces lieux où la mort s’affiche crûment au milieu du quotidien.Tout au long de cette double traversée vers l’inconnu, aucun savoir nes’acquiert, aucun secret n’est révélé, ni la douleur surmontée. Ce qui sedécouvre plutôt, sourdement, lentement, sans assurance même, c’estque la logique du montage qui séparait l’ici et le là-bas, la France etl’Inde, l’avant du trépas et son après, il revient de l’appliquer, cette loi dela division, à l’intérieur de chaque événement, lieu ou temps. Ni unesagesse, ni une pratique, une suite d’éblouissements. In other words, makingan open, articulate response to an anticipated mourning process: editing being theanswer. On one hand affectionately accompanying this old woman surroundedby her loved ones, recording shared love out loud on the edge of life, following, forexample, the eldest son exorcising his fear and distress in a theatrical scene full ofcathartic black humour. On the other hand, giving herself scope for tangents, goingwith her photographer brother to collect images of faces from elsewhere, anotherfinal flourish, amidst other rituals on the ghats in Benares in India, where death iscrudely displayed as part of everyday life. Throughout this double journey into theunknown, no knowledge is acquired, no secret revealved, or pain overcome. Whatis discovered rather, stealthily and slowly, even unassuredly, is the logic of editingthat separates the close to and far away, France and India, the before and afterpassing away; it comes back to application and this law of division at the heartof each event in time or space.
