Jean-Pierre RehmFestival DirectorJulio Bressane and Luc Moullet, two highly talented directors, one Brazilian and oneFrench, have honoured us by presiding over the competition juries – internationaland French. A major task, to tell the truth, not only in terms of the number of films,19 in the International competition and as many in the French and First Filmcompetitions, but also in terms of choice. A diverse range of production countries:from Iran to Japan by way of Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, theNetherlands, Spain, South Korea, South Africa, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Brazil – offering a wide range of disparate approaches in bothfiction and documentary films. As always, we strive to rise to the delicate challenge, for international and world premieres, as it is by displaying our choices and daring tosupport brand new films we believe in that we pursue our ultimate goal – one whichis not merely crucial but quite simply exhilarating. This is why we are thrilled by the attendance and trust of film-makers whosereputations are well-established, who offer us extremely exciting propositions, not tomention the great works of directors who are well-known at FID, as well as all thosewho absolutely must be discovered. In a nutshell, the harvest has been very fruitfuland the long process of sifting has brought with it some exciting surprises. As is customary by now, parallel programmes, six this year, will accompany thecompetitions and we shall leave you to make your discoveries in the pages whichfollow. A new departure this year, is that these programmes consist almost exclusivelyof recent films, never screened before – yet another way of highlighting the vitality ofcurrent production. We are also proud to announce a new prize, le Prix Renaud Victor, which will beawarded by a group of inmates at the Baumettes Prison in Marseilles (cf p. 29).Finally, now in its third year, after reaping the fruits from the successes of the first two,the adventure of FIDLab continues and we hope that there will be many rewardingencounters between those presenting the 11 projects and the producers who havecome to listen to them.Wishing you the best possible voyage of discovery simultaneously on paper and onscreen at the 22 nd edition, thank you for your loyal curiosity.046
