Pas si simple à trancher,puisque Lech Kowalski a choisi avant tout de jouer de la confrontationde deux types de production d’images. D’un côté, Louisiana Story, unfilm institutionnel commandé en 1948 à Robert Flaherty par la compagniepétrolière Standard Oil Company, où Richard Leacock signe l’image etVirgil Thompson la musique. En Louisiane, dans le bayou, une équipede prospecteurs vient forer la rivière. Ils achètent le droit d’installer underrick au père d’un gamin familier de ce paysage complexe et aveclequel l’un d’eux nouera amitié. Dans la tonalité chère au père de l’ethnofiction,il s’agit de travestir une histoire d’expropriation en gentille fablede lutte contre la nature et d’amitié paternaliste. De l’autre, lors de lacatastrophe de la marée noire du Golfe du Mexique en 2010, des imagesfabriquées par les télévisions, des associations et des particuliers, etdisponibles sur internet. Mais plutôt que de télécharger ces images,Kowalski les utilise en soulignant leur provenance. D’un côté, un beaunoir et blanc au service d’une histoire édifiante et trompeuse, de l’autredes images pauvres, sans signature et aux couleurs criardes, pour tenterde dénoncer l’horreur. L’ensemble alterne, une image critiquant l’autre,mais seulement pour souligner au final leur commune défaite devant lesfaits. (JPR)What is the lie indicated in the title ? On the one hand, a beautiful black and white film at the serviceof an edifying and misleading story and, on the other hand, poor quality images,without authorship and in garish colours, attempting to denounce the horror.
