Dans lesannées 60, il a réalisé des courts-métrages, dont Melting (1965), Olivia’s Place (1966),et —- ———- (1967), avec Malcolm Brodwick. En 1974 il achevait la réalisation deEadweard Muybridge, Zoopraxographer, un documentaire d’une heure sur l’œuvrephotographique de Muybridge. En 1995, en collaboration avec Noël Burch, il a réaliséRed Hollywood, un film sur l’œuvre cinématographique des victimes de la Blacklistd’Hollywood. Cette exploration historique de la Blacklist a également donnénaissance au livre Les Communistes de Hollywood : Autre chose que des martyrs,publié en 1994. En 2003, il a réalisé Los Angeles Plays Itself, un essai vidéo sur lareprésentation de la ville au cinéma. Avec cette œuvre, il a obtenu le Prix du MeilleurFilm Documentaire du National Film Board of Canada au Festival International du Filmde Vancouver 2003. La vidéo a également été élue Meilleur Documentaire de l’année2004 par les Critiques Cinéma de l’hebdomadaire Village Voice. Il enseigne le cadreet la composition d’image au California Institute of the Arts depuis 1987.Thom Andersen has lived in Los Angeles for most of his life. In 1974 he completed Eadweard Muybridge, Zoopraxographer,an hour-long documentation of Muybridge’s photographic work. In 1995,with Noël Burch, he completed Red Hollywood, a videotape about the filmworkcreated by the victims of the Hollywood Blacklist. Their work on the history of theBlacklist also produced a book, Les Communistes de Hollywood: Autre chose quedes martyrs, published in 1994. In 2003 he completed Los Angeles Plays Itself, a videoessay about the representation of Los Angeles in movies. It won the National FilmBoard of Canada Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2003 VancouverInternational Film Festival, and it was voted best documentary of 2004 in the VillageVoice Film Critics’ Poll. He has taught film composition at the California Institute ofthe Arts since 1987.036
