HUNGARIAN LIFE AND CULTURE WORLD-WIDE
In this column the reader will find three writings on the cultural life of different Hungarian communities in the world. These are the
following:
• Zsuzsánna Haynalné Kesserű: South-America Calling. Presentation given at the 48 th Study Week conference entitled
HUNGARIAN CULTURE II. — CENTERS OF HUNGARIAN CULTURE WORLD-WIDE — Three Poles: Hungary, Territories
in the Carpathian Basin outside Hungary, West — organized by the Hollandiai Mikes Kelemen Kör [Association for Hungarian
Art, Literature and Science in the Netherlands] and Mikes International between 27-30 September 2007 in Elspeet, the
Netherlands. In this presentation the author provided a complete overview of the conception of the three main Hungarian
Diasporas in South-America and their present status.
• Borbála Obrusánszky: The Professor from Kolozsvár Gets a Statue. In this brief note Ms. Obrusánszky highlights the main
achievements of the world-famous orientalist and linguist Gábor Szentkatolnai Bálint. He mastered some 30 languages. Due to
the ideological nature of the discussion about the origin of the Hungarian language in the last decennia of the 19 th century in
Hungary, he was pretty much sidelined, and as such he went into ‘self-emigration’, teaching for many years abroad. Nowadays
his œuvre is in the process of rediscovery. According to the plans a statue will be unveiled next year on March 13 (his birthday)
at Szentkatolna, his birthplace in Transylvania.
• Éva Pillerné Tircka: Hungarian Colony in Brazil. In two issues of the Hungarian News of Argentina (Argentínai Magyar
Hírlap) the author provides a colorful account of the highlights of the cultural life of the Hungarian colony in Brazil in 2007.
