egistrar's office's books were updated until 1838 in greek and afterwards due to a parliamentary decree, in
Hungarian.
The number of weddings that did not take place in Miskolc: 38
The locations were they occurred are:
Turkey 11 couples
Eger 10 couples
Pest 6 couples
Buda 5 couples
Szentendre 2 couples
In other places 4 couples exchanged oaths of eternal love.
From 1763 until 1783 the annual average of weddings that took place in Miskolc was 1. Later the number
started increasing and reached its peak in 1796. Afterwards, for a decade 5-8 weddings occurred annually and
from 1810 they started to decrease. Spousesof greek origin came from other cities as well (bride and groom,
too):
Pest 18 people
Eger 16 people
Buda 9 people
Ungvár ( Uzhgorod) 6 people
Tokaj 5 people
Nagyvárad ( Orantea) 5 people
Szentendre 2 people
Balassagyarmat 1 person
Gyöngyös 1 person
Vác 1 person
Other places 27 people
Polland 7 people
The evidence from Eger, Pest and Buda are noticeable. It is concluded that the family and as a result the
financial relations belonged mainly in those cities. In the case of orthodox couples, among the greek spouses
there are Serbians, Rumanians, Bulgarians and Russians. In the registrar's office's books the nationality is also
written. In most cases they included the place of origin but not the time when the person had arrived in
Hungary. The number of births started increasing from 1772, in the period 1790-1828 it fluctuated and then it
decreased substantially. It was noticed that one year more boys were mainly born and the next mainly girls.
The deaths were registered from 1726, while from 1784 onwards the number generally exceeds 10 deaths. In
1831 it reached 31 people due to a cholera epidemic that racked Upper Hungary. After that, the number
decreased considerably. 30-50 per cent of the victims were children (next to their names it is written "infant"
but at that time this could easily mean the age of 7-8). Among the dead people were others of different
nationality, for instance in 1849 Russian soldiers.
What is the balance of natural reproduction like? Until 1800 it is mainly positive but the births outnumber the
deaths only by 4-5 people. After 1831 there is a noticeable decrease: this possibly relates to the fact that after
the liberation of the greek nation, many Greeks in Hungary returned to their country. However, this
assumption is still not verified by documents!
In the registrar's office's books there are also notes concerning for instance Tokaj and Ungvár. Ifin those cities
the orthodox priest of Miskolc could replace the local priest then the opposite could also happen. Based on the
evidence, the first orthodox baptism in Miskolc took place in 1760 and the first wedding three years later.
Those days, for baptisms, weddings and funerals they had to ask permission from the catholic priest. In the last
two cases, the priest was more flexible but not in the firs case, because baptism increased the number of
orthodox believers. According to the above mentioned, it is detected that just as weddings occurred in other
cities besides Miskolc, the same way the baptism of the children of the Greeks in Miskolc could happen. In
1746 the total number of Greeks in Miskolc was 70. in 1769 there were 51 adults and 6 children and in 1777
296 people were living there out of whom 34 owned their premises. During the 1785 census, the Greeks
owned
