Ed.FAO-RomeAbstractEvaluation of economical and environmental efficiency of field protection forest beltsThe main effect of the forest shelterbelts on agricultural lands, specialy in the dry years, is the amelioration of the cropmicroclimate; on his turn, this is modifying the relations between the plant and the water regime.The modification of the microclimate is achieved, first of all, by the decrease of the wind`s speed and force with a directinfluence on snow management during the winter and on the water evaporation from the soil surface during the summer.Summarizing the yield differences as a result of the forest shelterbelts, the data collected on long periods, including normal,medium and dry years and on very big protected agricultural lands showed a surplus yield of 16-25% compare withthe unprotected lands.The shelterbelts are more efficient during the dry years; the snowmanagement during the winter is more than the summerinfluences; they are more efficient than the pure agrotehnical proceedings; they are a necessary attribute on irrigated lands,improving the efficiency of the irrigation and decreasing the quantity of the necessary water.The shelterbelts are producing considerable quantities of wood (very important for the plain dry regions) fruits, they giveshelter for wildlife, useful insects and birds. They ameliorate the environment, the landscape, the life conditions for thepeople in theses severe natural conditions of the dry regions.Keywords: forest shelterbelts, unprotected lands, ameliorate, landscape.78
