 There is not
one interface technology
that works
best for all applications,
although
digital is rapidly
becoming the technology
of choice. Of
the digital interfaces,
IEEE1394
(FireWire) is the best suited for most industrial
machine vision applications. It
supports high 80 MB/s data rates with
guaranteed bandwidth, is extremely cost
effective, works seamlessly with multiple
cameras, and supports a common camera
control standard (IIDC). New advances
in FireWire technology will also
allow doubling the bandwidth up to
160 MB/s.
Outside the USA: +49.671.601.387
Selecting the right interface at the
start can save significant cost. First, the
host system must be able to support the
interface, either through an addin card
or builtin ports. This is one of the reasons
USB 2.0 is so popular. Another
consideration is bandwidth. If customers
need a single camera generating 120 MB/s
of image data, CameraLink is currently
the only option. But if they need eight cameras
on the same interface card, each
generating 10 MB/s, FireWire is the
answer. Other interface considerations include
support for a common camera control
standard, like IIDC for FireWire, and
how the interface affects the physical size
and form factor of the camera.
meters using fiber optic), no frame grabber
required, highest data integrity – resend
mechanism eliminates data loss, high
data rates – Prosilica’s cameras are capable
on running at a sustained 124 Mbytes/
second, standardized software interface –
Prosilica’s GigE Vision cameras are plugandplay
compatible with all major machine
vision software, easiest multicamera
setup and operation – ideal for multicamera
systems, easy wireless transmission
is possible, inexpensive network cables can
be cut and terminated in the field to make
cable routing easy and cost effective.
End users should care about camera
interfaces because the choice of interface
affects cost, reliability, and ease
of integration. GigE Vision provides
highly reliable, easytointegrate cameras
at an economical price. Also, end
users should choose technology that will
continue into the future – Gigabit Ethernet
is the best interface choice today and
the dominant interface of the future.
