Objectives
Craniomandibular dysfunctions (CMD) are a predominant, controversially discussed subject in
dentistry. As the symptoms are multifactorially conditioned, one therapy in most cases is not
enough. The conventional MRI is known as the best not-invasive medical imaging to display
the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The aim of this study was a systemic literature review.
How much is MRI influencing therapy for patients witch CMD. Respectively which therapeutic
consequences can be drawn from MRI.
Material and Method
Literature research has been made in electronic data databases like Medline or Pubmed,
followed by an additional manual search in different professional journals. All the citations
were checked independent of two persons using eligibility criteria. The data rating happened
in tabular comparison of the survey contents. Additionally the surveys were analyzed for therapeutic
effectiveness and the level of evidence.
Conclusion
In conclusion 54 surveys fulfilled the eligibility criteria. The therapeutic significance, which is
awarded to the MRI is different and can be classified in four categories:
- Differentiated statements to the therapeutic significance of MRI
- MRI for evaluation of surgeries
- MRI for evaluation of conservative therapeutic measures
- MRI for evaluation of the relationship between orthodontics and CMD
-
Discussion & Conclusion
The therapeutic significance, which is awarded to the MRI in the implemented surveys, is
various but mostly vague formulated. Noticeable are incomplete described surveys contents.
Referring to the modell of Fryback et al. (1991) the therapeutic significance is constituted in
some surveys, a patient-relevant benefit is not. The rank of evidence is restricted in the existing
literature, the retrospective investigations predominate.
