Objectives: The aim is to report an ongoing educational project intended to improve intraoral
image quality at the Public Dental Care Clinics in the County of Västerbotten, Sweden.
Methods: A cost-effective education program in two steps focusing on radiographic projection
geometry and intraoral imaging technique has been implemented. The program is organised
by the oral and maxillofacial radiology clinic. Target group is all personnel involved in x-ray
imaging. The course is organised in two steps with lectures and training located at the participants’
clinic. Step one is a four-hour day comprising theoretical lessons and introduction to
individual training. Step two is individual training performed on a manikin and a radiography
simulator. The clinic disposes the training equipment for three weeks. A course evaluation
form is distributed after the end of training period.
The first course was given in May 2011. The plan is to give ten courses per year throughout
2014.
Results: Until January 2012 six clinics have finished the course. Evaluation showed that all
participants were satisfied with the theoretical part. Individual training on manikin was
performed by 97% and simulator training by 50%. An unexpected off-spring of the course
was that one clinic initiated a project for evaluation of image quality of the clinic’s bitewing
examinations.
Updated results will be presented at the congress.
Conclusion: The course meets a need for skill improvement in intraoral radiographic imaging.
Development of a method for systematic evaluation of image quality will be initiated.
