Body
Objectives: The primary aim of the study was to investigate the use of digital radiography
within dental care practices in Greece.
Methods: Data were gathered via a piloted, self-completed questionnaire, and circulated to 600
random participants in the Greek National Dental Congress. The resulting data were statistically
tested.
Results: Of the 600 only 120 questionnaires were returned to analyze statistically (20%).
Of the 120 responses 100 were general dentists, 10 were periodontists, 5 were endodontists,
and 5 were pedodontists. Overall 53,3% use lead apron at all patients, 57,5% use intraoral
films while 31,7 use intraoral sensors, 66,7% use intraoral radiographs as the primary and key
radiographic control, 58,3% use only paralleling technique, a percentage which rises to 74,2 in
periodontal cases, while in endodontic cases the percentage of bisecting angle is increased to
a 69,2%. The major criterion of buying a digital system is the dose reduction and the speed
of image acquisition, while, the key criterion for not buying one, are economic reasons. What
was interesting is that 84% of endodontic(inital and final exam) and a 78% of periodontal
treatments are made with use of paralleling technique while pedodontists use bitewing radiographs
at a 70% of their patients.
Conclusion: There is a tendency among greek dentists to buy digital intraoral radiographic
systems (younger dentists had higher digital system percentages). The main drawback for dentists
to purchase a digital system are economic reasons and though no previous studies have
been made among greek dentists the results are comparable to those of other countries
