WIDTH OF THE PERIODONTAL SPACE MEASuRED ON DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHS

Body
Purpose: To compare the width of the periodontal space measured on digital dental radiographs
amd Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).
Method and materials: A de-frozen anatomic specimen with 15 teeth (13, 12, 23-26, 33-31,
41-45, 47) was studied. Dental radiographs (paralelling standard and paralelling buccal) took
by dental digital rdiography Digora and CBCT images took by Kodak 9500 of the dentition were
obtained. The width of the periodontal space was measured in corresponging anatomic locations
on dental radiographs and on panoramic reconstructions of the CBCT images.
Results: The measured mean periodontal space width amounted to 0.22mm (SD 0.6) in the
paralelling standard technique, 0.22mm (SD 0.5) in the paralelling buccal technique, and 0.25
(SD 0.7) in the panoramic reconstructions of the CBCT images.
Conclusions: The measured width of the periodontal space depends on the imaging technique
used. The differences of results obtained in two techniques of dental radiographs were less
than the differences between CBCT images and dental radiographs.
