Keynote 1 Title FORENSIC MEDICINE AND IMAGING Authors RuEDIGER LESSIG Affiliations Insitute of Legal Medicine, Martin-Luther-University of Halle-Wittenberg KeYnOTeS Body Different imaging tests have been established as standard examination in forensic medicine and play therefore an important role in Forensic Medicine. Originally the only method used was X-Ray but with continued development and the introduction of such technologies like computer tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), these technologies are gaining importance for forensic examinations. In addition to these circumstances postmortem CT scans are also considered for situations where an autopsy is either not possible or prohibited by religious objections or ethical concerns. Radiological equipment should be available for mass fatality incidents, since traditional or digital X ray and/or CT scanners are part of the standard technology. In cases of unknown persons or mass disasters the different radiological methods are very helpful. Due to the situation that dental X-Rays are routinely used in dental practices and based on the country of origin for the victims a good source of ante mortem data. Especially orthopantomograms where a complete view of the upper and lower jaw with detailed images of each tooth as part of the patient’s record are useful. Studies have shown that treatment charts may contain mistakes and OPGs have the advantage of providing objective documentation. Postmortem X-Rays, that capture invisible treatments such as root canal, are now standard for forensic dentists. During the Tsunami Disaster Victim Identification effort it was realized that many victims were of Scandinavian origin and had bite wing X-Rays as part of the patient record. Therefore it was decided to generate the same images for all of the victims. Several examples of the forensic radiological routine case work from different points of view will be reported und the advantages or disadvantages of the “new” imaging methods like CT or MRI will be discussed. 7
