Body<br />

Both degenerative changes of cervical spine and osteoporosis are conditions that frequently<br />

occur in elderly and may markedly impair the quality of life. On panoramic (PAN) radiographs<br />

signs of osteoporosis and, when anterior part of the cervical spine is depicted, vertebral degeneration<br />

also can be identified.<br />

Objective: The purpose of this study to evaluate age dependent radiomorphometric changes in<br />

PAN pictures of the mandible and the depicted are<strong>as</strong> of the cervical vertebrae in postmenopausal<br />

women.<br />

Methods: 50 postmenopausal women who were managed with osteoporosis in Osteoporosis<br />

Center of our University were underwent PAN radiography in accordance with standard clinical<br />

protocols and radiation safety legislations. Only the c<strong>as</strong>es w<strong>here</strong> anterior parts of the upper<br />

four cervical vertebrae were depicted were involved in this study. The patients were divided<br />

into twol groups: Group 1 (mean age 60,4+/-3,0) and Group 2 (mean age 70,1+/-3,8). Bone<br />

mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine w<strong>as</strong> me<strong>as</strong>ured with a DXA and PAN indices, namely<br />

mandibular cortical (MCI) and PAN mandibular index (PMI) were calculated. Two matched<br />

control groups with negative anamnesis of osteoporosis were selected.<br />

Results: MCI values of Group 1 were higher without significant differences, but in Group 2<br />

PMI parameters proved to be significantly lower. Despite the significant differences that were<br />

found comparing the BMD of the three MCI subgroups, no proportional relation w<strong>as</strong> observed<br />

between mean values of subgroups. Degenerative changes were found more frequently in older<br />

women.<br />

Conclusions: Dentists should be either aware of cervical vertebral changes or signs of osteoporosis<br />

on PAN radiographs.<br />
