Body
OBJECTIVES: Cone-beam computed tomography systems have been designed for imaging hard
tissues of the maxillofacial region. The aim of this study was to evaluate dental students and
residents’ knowledge regarding CBCT.
METHODS: The study was conducted by distributing a questionnaire consisting of 20 questions.
This questionnaire was given to 250 dental students and 150 dental residents from different
program trainings such as dento-alveolar surgery, orthodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics,
periodontology and oral and maxillofacial surgey at Faculty of Dental Medicine, « Gr.T.Popa »
University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi, Romania. Differences in responses by residency training,
education level, age and sex were statistically assessed with the Pearson‘s chi-squared
test.
RESULTS: 300 questionnaires were analysed. Age range of dental students and residents who
participated in the study varied from 20 to 40 years old. 89.5% dental students and residents
said they did not work with cone beam computed tomography and 80.5% dental students and
residents had no knowledge about CBCT. Statistical results showed that only 19.5% of dental
students and residents had heard of CBCT. Of these, 43.5% said they had learned about CBCT
from faculty courses, 31.3% from dental articles, 19.3% from dental congresses and conferences
and 5.9% from the internet.
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that dental students and residents’ knowledge about CBCT
should be increased by improving the dental school curriculum and introduction of courses on
the CBCT in residency program.
