Ultrasound elastography is based on the principle that malignant tissue is stiffer than nonmalignant
tissue. A conventional ultrasound can be used with some additional software to
form the elastogram. This is the first time that ultrasound elastography is introduce to the
EADMFR audience. Ultrasound elastography has been found to be useful in evaluating breast
lesions and have been used to help to distinguish between malignant and benign lesions
which have reduced the number of biopsies performed in the breast clinic.
We are applying the same elastography principles in analysing the different lumps and bumps
in the head and neck. A small study has been devised to look at a group of patients who
presented to the dental radiology department with a lump in the head and neck region. Three
different ultrasound machines using different form of elastography softwares will be used to
analyse the stiffness of the lumps. When the „stress“ form has been applied to these lumps,
an elastogram can be obtained which displayed a visually colour-scale stiffness. These ranges
of stiffness are recorded. The lumps will then undergo a fine needle aspiration cytology for
diagnosis.
The results of the elastogram study will be compared to the cytology results of the lumps and
bumps. This study is important to establish if ultrasound elastography is a reliable diagnostic
tool to differentiate malignant lesion from benign lesion. As part of this elastography presentation,
a separate presentation on ultrasound elastography on thyroid will also be presented
by my colleague Dr Hajatdoost.
The data gathering for study is currently being finalised at the time of abstract submission.
Results, discussion and conclusion of this study will be presented at the meeting in June
2012.
