Methods : A 3 pages questionnaire was sent to the dentist population of Geneva (Switzerland) in 2010. Results : The response rate was of 66% (207/313). TANIMOTO 1 Affiliations 1 Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Hiroshima University, Hiroshima, JAPAN Body Objectives:The aim of the present study is two folds, (1) to investigate the materials of contrast media and foods used in the videofluoroscopic swallowing study(VFSS), (2) to investigate the differences between the VFSS results of liquid and solid foods as the test foods. Methods: Literature search and data interpretation were performed according to a systematic method: (i) problem specification, (ii) a plan for the literature search, (iii) literature search and retrieval, and (iv) data interpretation. The problem was specified as follows: Which test materials were used for VFSS? Two data bases were searched using specified indexing terms. The contrast media and foods used by VFSS were extracted from the selected publications. And, we made a careful comparative review of the VFSS results that the patients swallowed the liquid and solid foods. Results: The literature search yielded 561 titles and abstracts. In 34 publications of 561, contrast media such as Iodine were used except for barium sulfate. Solid foods as a test food were used in 105 publications. Finally, 14 publications of 105 described separately the VFSS results of liquid and solid foods about the aspiration were selected. Aspiration often occurred by swallowing liquids, but few solid foods. On the other hand, the residue rate of the solid foods at the pharynx was higher than that of liquids. Conclusion: The occurrence of the aspiration and penetration was various depending on the kinds of foods.
