Body
Objectives: The aim of this multi-center study was to investigate the prevalence and patterns
of impacted and transmigrated maxillary and mandibular canine teeth in a sample of the
Turkish population.
Methods: The records, panoramic, periapical radiographs and CBCT images (where available)
of 10,700 patients who referred to three different university hospitals (North Part, Middle
Anatolian Part of Turkey and North Cyprus) between January 2007 and December 2011 were
reviewed. An impacted canine was considered to be transmigrated when at least part of its
length had crossed the midline.
Results: The number and prevalence of impacted and transmigrated canine teeth were 266
(2.4%) and 37 (0.34%), respectively. Nine (%0.08) transmigrated canines were in mandible
while 28 (%0.26) in maxillary segment.
Conclusions: The early detection of impacted as well as transmigrated teeth is vital to ensure
successful treatments, so demographic studies are important.
