Body
Objectives: Associations between systemic diseases and periodontal diseases are documented
for a long time now through epidemiological studies. Periodontitis has been shown to increase
the systemic inflammatory response, which has been implicated in atherosclerosis and cerebrovascular
events. One focus of interest is atherosclerosis, the underlying event of cerebrovasular
diseases due to its serious health impact. The aim of this study was to analyze the link
between periodontitis and transient ischemic attack using Dental CT.
Material and methods: 37 patients, 29 to 59 old with recent history of transient ischemic
attack were selected by a neurologist. Three dentists, phD students, assessed the odontal
status of each patient on the Dental CT. We analyzed periapical lesions, interradicular lesions,
number of missing teeth and loss of periodontal bone.
Results:.After adjustment for age, gender, number of teeth, vascular risk factors and diseases,
adult socioeconomic conditions and lifestyle factors a radiographic bone loss 3.6 times (1.58-
8.28) higher risk of cerebral ischemia than subjects without periodontitis. 21% of the patients
presented more than 6mm bone loss from the enamel-cement junction
The study group analyzed by Dental CT presented high number of missing teeth, periapical
lesions and interradicular lesions.
Conclusions: Periodontitis is an independent risk factor for cerebral ischemia and acute exacerbation
of inflammatory processes in the periodontium might be a trigger for the event of cerebral
ischemia. This study confirms the existence of correlations between periodontal infections
an transient ischemic attack.
