Body
Objectives: To assess the quality of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images taken on
three different CBCT units, and to determine the main causes of error.
Method: The image quality of all CBCT scans taken during 2010 on the i-CAT Classic, the Next
Generation i-CAT and the Accuitomo 3D FDP was rated using the 2 point rating scale recommended
by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) (UK). The images were graded either acceptable
or unacceptable. The reason for any unacceptable image was recorded and the overall
rejection rate calculated for each unit and compared to the standard set by HPA.
Results: A total of 1066 CBCT scans were assessed. The overall rejection rate was 3.4%. The
rejection rate was 4.2% (15/361) for the i-CAT Classic, 6.4% (7/109) for the Next Generation
i-CAT and 2.3% (14/596) for the Accuitomo 3D FDP. For the i-CAT classic the most common
reason for rejection was blurring of the image due to patient movement (86.7%). For the Next
Generation i-CAT and Accuitomo 3D FDP, it was failure to image the complete area of interest
(85.7 and 57.1% respectively.)
Conclusions: Overall the reject rate was below the recommended standard of 5%. However the
reject rate for the Next Generation did not reach the standard. Particular care has to be taken
to ensure the patient is immobilised correctly when undertaking CBCT using the i-CAT CBCT
units. For both the Next Generation i-CAT and Accuitomo 3D FDP careful positioning is required
to ensure the region of interest is completely captured in the scan volume.
