KOCSIS 1 , J.E. zÖLLER 1 Affiliations 1 Department of Craniomaxillofacial and Plastic Surgery, Cologne, GERMANY Body Objectives: This study investigates the prevalence of pathological incidental findings in cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) for orthodontic patients.Since for orthodontic indications larger volumes of the patients are recorded the user is confronted with incidental findings in the CBCT scan. The aim of this study was to detect the prevalence of pathological findings in 345 CBCT scans of orthodontic patients. Methods 345 CBCT scans were investigated retrospectively for incidental findings and signs of dental, skeletal, sinus and various pathology. Results In 345 analysed scans sings the following pathologies could be detected; 94 (27,25%) dental aplasia, 12 (3,48%) dental hypoplasia, 7 (2,03%) hyperdontia and oligondontia each could be detected. Skeletal incidental findings were showed in 71 (20,58%) cases in terms of dislocation, 5 (1,45%) odontogenesis cyst, 7 (2,03%) vertical bone loss and 2 (0,58%) horizontal bone loss. Pathologies in the maxillary sinus and nose area were detected in 13 (3,77%) scans with large nasal concha and 27 (7,83%) cases with sinusitis, Further various pathologies were investigated associated with suspicion of cerebral metastasis, fractured dens axis and tonsillolith in one case each. Non odontogenetic cysts, suspicion of osteomyelitis, carotid artery stenosis calcifications, intracranial calcifications, tumors and sialoliths were not verified in any case. Conclusion Our study shows that incidental findings in CBCT for orthodontic patients are frequent for dental and sinus pathologies. When examining CBCT scans and analysing large volumes, orthodontist may be confronted with incidental findings that are not part of their usual task field and consequently need a supportive and interdisciplinary treatment.
