Body
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the upper central incisors using clinically taken
cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images to calculate PTR and its relation with chronological
age of the subjects.
Methods: A selection of 182 (99 female, 83 male) sets of IIT/CCD system Newtom 3G CBCT
scans ( QR SLR, Verona, Italy) was made from a larger database of CBCT patients. The selection
was restricted to patients with upper central incisors (with normal dental anatomy) which
had no open apex, caries, internal or external root resorption, or restorative treatment. Using
Amira software the volume ratio of the pulp cavity to the whole root of one of central incisors
teeth in each scan was calculated (PTR). In order to find the possible correlation between the
chronological age and pulp/tooth ratio, linear regression analysis was performed.
Results: The analysis showed that correlation between age and PTR was R= -4.65
(R=correlation coefficient) and the difference between R in different age groups was not statistically
significant but different in gender groups (-3.97 in females and -5.41 in males).
Conclusion: The results of this study showed a moderate correlation between PTR and age. The
accuracy of the age estimation method which has been used in this study is dependent on
image quality and spatial resolution of the images, so as the current CBCT devices have been
significantly improved, further studies are recommended.
