Body
Objectives
The aim of the study was to evaluate the optical density of digital radiography images of enamel
and dentine subjected to bleaching.
Methods:
The material consisted of 199 slices of 1 mm thickness obtained from 151 permanent teeth
extracted due to clinical indications – mainly third molars (143 erupted and 33 unerupted).
After being washed, sandblasted and polished the slices were conditioned in physiological
saline solution in order to be cleaned of contamination created during preparation. The slices
were radiographed using Digora digital radiography system. Next bleaching agents were applied
in three groups. Group 1: 65 samples treated by Opalescence Xtra Boost containing 38% hydrogen
peroxide. Group 2: 69 samples - Opalescence Xtra Boost with plasma arc lamp Apollo Elite.
Group 3: 65 samples - Bianco Supreme containing 35% hydrogen peroxide enhanced by plasma
lamp. Bleaching consisted of three cycles lasting 12 minutes then the samples were once more
radiographed. Optical density was measured using Digora software in standardized regions
on interest in enamel and dentine. Differences in densities in corresponding areas before and
after bleaching were analysed statistically.
Results:
Optical density of hard tissues of teeth decreased significantly after application of both
bleaching agents, but the decline was more intensive in case of Bianco Supreme preparation.
Decrease in optical density was higher in dentine than in enamel. Application of plasma lamp
had no statistically significant effect on the measured densities.
Conclusion:
Digital radiography optical density measurements were effective in assessment of changes of
density of hard tissues of teeth.
